Richard Abnet came to Stillwater in 1961 and began to renovate an old farm and set up his studio in the barn. He became interested in ceramics when studying Architecture at the Univ. of Mn in 1958, where he received his undergraduate degree in Art. He received his Masters in Ceramics at the School for American Craftsmen in New York. For the next 48 years he worked full time as a potter, concentrating on utilitarian work and religious Commissions. His designs of altars and baptistries, along with altar ware, adorn churches throughout the country and world. Richard’s life inspired students in his studio and out. His courage and constant need of creation was an example for those who knew him.
Dad was so much in my thoughts today as I worked in his showroom. I wish he could be with us this weekend as we carry on his tradtion of art, creativity and community.
Hope to see all of you at the farm.
